NTT DoCoMo in Japan has already started to test new 4th generation cell phone networks. During a test in a moving car, they were able to receive 32 different video signals at the same time, and when stationary, the throughput goes up into the range of 1 gigbit per second. Stunning, considering that “broadband” DSL connections are often 100-1000 times SLOWER than that data rate.
4G may be the point that broadband wireless access comes to replace the last mile on phones and television. With this type of throughput, it wouldn’t be out of the question to create receivers for television, movies, telephone, and other services without actually requiring a hardwire connection.
Is broadband wireless going to replace it all?
